Bergen Record
November 10, 2006
Election Night ended early at Bergen County Republican headquarters in Hackensack, as party loyalists gathered by the television to witness evidence of their worst fears come true.
Todd Caliguire's loss in the county executive race meant an eight-year shutout of the GOP from Bergen's highest elected office. The loss by a pair of freeholder candidates meant that the board would be, for the first time, composed entirely of Democrats. The Republicans, once in firm control of the county's political scene, also failed to deliver a plurality to Tom Kean Jr., the GOP's unsuccessful Senate candidate.
"I don't think we were this low even [during] Watergate," said Assemblyman John Rooney, who lost his bid for reelection as mayor of Northvale.
