Jailbird Martha Stewart has become an unwitting poster girl in a bitter election battle in her home state of New Jersey.
A mailer showing Martha's photo superimposed over a jail cell is making the rounds in Bergen County, where Democrat Leo McGuire is challenging Sheriff Joel Trella.
"In Joel Trella's Jail, Even Martha Stewart Could Escape Unnoticed," reads the mailer, put out by McGuire's backers.*
Democrats and Republicans alike have organized defense squads to spot T-shirts supporting the other side and block them from view. ABC News staffers went to rallies wearing the other party's T-shirt and found that each campaign had its own methods of preventing the T-shirts from being seen.
For example, at an Oct. 21 Kerry rally in Minneapolis, staffers were surrounded by a team of dancing Kerry campaign workers with large signs. When other staffers tried to attend an Oct. 23 Bush-Cheney rally in Melbourne, Fla., they were barred because of the Kerry T-shirts they were wearing.
